At GI Eagles, basketball is more than just a sport—it’s a lifeline for change in the Glen Innes community. Founded by community volunteer Manuel Walkers, GI Eagles is a platform where young people are inspired to dream bigger, grow stronger, and find purpose through teamwork and perseverance. By weaving core values like respect, resilience, and responsibility into every practice and game, we’re shaping futures, fostering hope, and creating positive pathways for our tamariki. Our Journey
The GI Eagles Basketball Trust began in late 2022, inspired by a group of local kids playing on a broken outdoor court on Elstree Avenue. Emerging from the isolation of COVID, they were eager to reconnect, move, and compete. Seeing their passion, Manuel Walkers, along with a few dedicated parents, came together to form the Trust, enabling fundraising for much-needed indoor court space. In just a few months, the Eagles fielded their first team in Auckland City Basketball competitions. From a single team, we grew to several, with kids often playing in borrowed gear, bare feet, or jandals. Despite the odds, their spirit was unmatched. Two years later, we’re still going strong. With 305 local children participating in fun nights, elite training sessions, and Saturday leagues, the Eagles have become a cornerstone of the Glen Innes community. Our holiday programme, attended by 90 kids each session, is led by college basketballers who mentor the next generation.
